Insurance Policy Translation

An insurance policy records the insurance contract and identifies the insurer, policyholder, insured person or property, beneficiary, policy number, inception and expiry dates, territorial scope, sum insured, premium and applicable conditions. These roles are kept distinct because the policyholder, insured and beneficiary are not necessarily the same person.

The document may evidence medical, travel, motor, property, professional or other cover before a consulate, employer, bank, contracting authority, court, insurer or registration body. The translation states the agreed cover without extending it and without turning the policy into proof that a loss occurred or an indemnity was paid.

Material provisions include insured risks, limits and sublimits, deductible or excess, exclusions, waiting periods, territory, currency, premium payment and notice requirements. A schedule may list separate people, vehicles, properties, routes, activities and coverage amounts.

General and special conditions, certificates, Green Cards, riders, endorsements, schedules and claim records are related but perform different functions. The scope follows the set that will actually be submitted so that definitions or cross-references essential to the policy are not omitted.

The translation follows clause numbering, headings, defined terms, tables and internal references. Company and personal names, registration details, addresses, dates, currencies, percentages, premiums, limits and deductibles are checked separately. Abbreviations are expanded only when the context supports one unambiguous meaning.

Terms such as coverage, insured event, claim, indemnity, liability limit, excess and deductible are selected according to the type of insurance and target legal context. The signed wording remains authoritative; an exclusion, restriction or condition is never broadened into promotional language.

Certified translation concerns the authorship and presentation of the translation. Apostille and legalisation concern the origin of a public document and are not automatically added to every policy issued by a private insurer. A recipient may instead request a certified translation, certified copy, signed original or separate public certificate.

For a foreign policy used in Bulgaria or a Bulgarian policy used abroad, the issuing country, legal nature, signatures, attachments and written recipient requirements are reviewed. Translation certification and any authentication of the source document therefore remain clearly separate services.

Price depends on the language pair, characters and pages, repeated clauses, tables, schedules, legibility and complexity of insurance terminology. A one-page certificate and a complete contract with policy wording, endorsements and schedules represent very different volumes.

Certified copies, notarial work, external authentication, courier and additional copies are calculated separately from the language work. A combined quotation can cover the commissioned set and identify exactly which records and attachments are included.

The schedule includes preparation, translation, independent revision and final checks of defined terms, numbers, dates, amounts, currencies and cross-references. A short legible policy supports a shorter timetable; scanned conditions, multiple tables or inconsistent versions require more control.

Translation time is separate from the insurer’s time to issue a duplicate or certificate and from notarial or administrative processing. Where a claim, visa or tender has a fixed deadline, revision, formatting and delivery are planned as part of the same schedule.

A legible PDF of the complete policy, schedule, endorsements and signature pages allows the language, volume and format to be assessed. Non-essential personal data may be masked for an initial estimate, while headings, numbering, tables, definitions and document links remain visible.

An electronic policy, signed paper original, certified copy and insurer certificate can have different evidential value. The recipient and requested certification determine whether a physical original is needed, not the channel through which the quotation was prepared.

The ISO 17100 process separates translation from independent revision. Checks cover the parties, defined terms, risks, coverage, exclusions, limits, deductibles, premium, periods, currencies, numbers, schedules and clause references.
