Translation of a Certificate of Family Ties

The official Bulgarian record is the “Certificate for a spouse and family ties”. It proves civil status and an existing relationship in the direct or collateral line. A municipal administration issues it from civil-registration data; the translation agency does not issue or amend the certificate itself.

The record connects the subject with a spouse and the relatives named in the prescribed form. For use abroad, that structure matters: the translated document must show unambiguously who the subject is, which relationship is recorded and to whom each table row belongs.

The prescribed form records the subject, a spouse and living or deceased first-degree relatives in the direct line and second-degree relatives in the collateral line. These are distinct family roles and should not be collapsed into the generic word “relative”.
