A certified written translation combines an accurate rendering of the document with the translator’s signature and the form of authentication required by the receiving organisation.

A certified written translation is a document translation in which the translator confirms by signature that the text is complete and accurate. Depending on its intended use, the translation may carry a statement, notarisation of the signature or certification by a competent authority. The certification identifies the person who signed the translation; it does not automatically authenticate the source document itself.
When a foreign document is translated into Bulgarian under the applicable procedure for use in Bulgaria, the translator’s signature on the translation is notarised. Before that, the foreign document itself may require an apostille or legalisation, or it may be exempt under an international agreement. These are separate steps serving different purposes.
For a Bulgarian document translated into a foreign language for use abroad, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs certifies the translator’s signature when that certification is required or accepted in the destination country. The receiving organisation may instead require a locally authorised translator, its own declaration or another form of certification. One certified form is therefore not universally valid in every country.
A certified translation normally identifies the source and target languages, the translated document, the translator’s signature and the relevant statement or certification. Depending on the procedure, it may be attached to the original, an official copy or another copy. An apostille or legalisation authenticates the origin of the official document, not the linguistic accuracy of its translation.
