The main difference between consecutive and simultaneous interpretation is when the audience hears the interpreted message. In consecutive mode, the speaker completes a short unit of meaning and pauses while the interpreter renders it in the other language. In simultaneous mode, the interpreter listens and speaks almost at the same time, with a brief natural delay. Both are professional forms of interpreting, but they create a different pace and require different arrangements.
Consecutive interpretation preserves direct contact between the speakers. It suits negotiations, interviews, site visits, small training sessions, appointments with a notary or public authority, and other situations built around an exchange of remarks. Simultaneous interpretation maintains an uninterrupted presentation and works well for conferences, congresses, large presentations and tightly scheduled programmes. Listeners follow their selected language through headsets while the speaker continues without pausing after each segment.
The number of languages and the way participants speak and listen also shape the choice. A bilateral meeting can often be organised consecutively in both language directions. At a multilingual event, simultaneous channels allow different groups to listen in their respective languages, but each channel requires a planned interpreting team and technical configuration. The possible combinations are not unlimited: they depend on professional availability, working languages and the actual architecture of the event.
Technology is an important distinction, but it is more nuanced than “with equipment” versus “without equipment”. A quiet consecutive meeting may need only a well-positioned interpreter, whereas a larger room can require microphones and sound reinforcement. Traditional simultaneous interpretation uses a booth, console, microphone, transmitters, receivers and headsets. Remote or hybrid delivery also needs a suitable platform, reliable connection and technical support. Clean audio matters in both modes.
Duration, workload, language directions and subject matter indicate how many interpreters are needed. One specialist may cover a short consecutive meeting; for a longer programme, the schedule is divided according to its segments and the necessary breaks. Extended simultaneous work normally provides alternating interpreters for each active language channel to maintain accuracy and concentration. The agenda, presentations, names, figures and specialised terminology support preparation for both formats.
The decision should not rest on an assumed price alone. Consecutive delivery may involve a lighter technical setup but extends the programme, while simultaneous delivery uses more resources yet preserves its pace and can serve a larger multilingual audience. La Fit Trans assesses the meeting purpose, audience size, languages, duration, venue, remote participation and budget in order to propose a format, team and technical solution suited to the actual event.
