A language proficiency certificate may follow an international examination or be issued by a university, school, language centre or another organisation. These records do not share one legal status, format or verification method. The word ‘certificate’ alone therefore does not determine whether an apostille, another form of authentication or only a translation is appropriate.
## What kind of document is a language proficiency certificate?
It normally identifies the language, level achieved, examination or programme, date and issuer. Some examination systems provide a separate statement of results, electronic report or verifiable record. A document from a private training centre and one from a public educational institution may follow different formalities even when they describe a similar level.
## What must remain exact in the translation?
The examination and issuing organisation, Common European Framework level, overall score and component results are rendered consistently. The same applies to the candidate’s name, test date, certificate number, centre, validity information and online verification code. Original designations remain recognisable where they help the recipient verify the record.
## When is a translation of the certificate sufficient?
Many universities and employers accept a clear translation, while some accept the original language. Other recipients request a certified translation or a stated number of copies. The scope follows the actual requirement of the institution receiving the document, without adding formalities that do not serve that submission.
## When may legalization or authentication be required?
The answer depends on the country of issue, the issuer, the signature and the destination. Apostilles concern public documents and are not automatically available for every certificate from a private examination body. A Bulgarian document used abroad may require authentication of a signature or certification of the translation, but ministry steps do not follow merely from the document’s title.
## How is a foreign certificate handled for use in Bulgaria?

## How are the level and examination results presented?
Levels A1–C2, point scales and scores for reading, writing, listening and speaking are not mechanically converted. ## What is the role of online verification?
Many examination bodies offer verification through a number, code or secure portal.
