Legalisation of an ISO certificate may form part of a file for a public tender, supplier registration, an international agreement, an audit or submission to an authority. The expression “ISO certificate” is widely used, but the International Organization for Standardization develops standards and does not issue certificates. The document is issued by a separate certification body, while the translation, certification or authentication required depends on its origin and on the recipient’s express instructions.
## What is an ISO certificate?
An ISO certificate is written assurance from an independent certification body that a stated system, product, process or service meets specified requirements. A management-system certificate usually identifies the organisation, the applicable standard, certified scope, sites, certificate number and validity period. Legalisation or certification of a translation does not create the certificate and cannot extend the scope confirmed by its issuer.
## When is an ISO certificate translated?
Translation is useful when the certificate is submitted to a recipient working in another language, such as a contracting authority, corporate customer, register, regulator or supply-chain partner. ## What details are followed in the translation?

The certification body, accreditation body, marks, electronic signature, verification code or link and every annex are identified separately so that their different functions remain clear.
## When is a certified translation sufficient?
For many commercial relationships, supplier-approval procedures and private agreements, the recipient may accept a professional or certified translation together with a copy of the certificate and an online verification route. The contracting authority, agreement or organisation’s internal rules determine the form. ## When may additional authentication be required?
Apostille and consular legalisation apply to eligible public instruments and do not automatically cover every privately issued ISO certificate. The service may include translation, editorial review, a certified copy and, where applicable, preparation of an eligible authenticated signature or copy. No universal administrative procedure is added when the tender, partner or authority accepts a simpler form.
## How is a foreign ISO certificate presented in Bulgaria?
A foreign certificate is assessed by its country, issuer, language, online verification and the Bulgarian recipient’s requirement. In a tender or registration, an accurate translation of the scope and validity can be more important than a generic promise of legalisation. If official authentication is requested, its route is determined separately from the type of document and an eligible signature or certified copy.
## How are the issuer, accreditation, price and turnaround checked?
The issuer is identified through the certification body’s name and mark, the certificate number and the stated verification channel. For accredited certification, the accreditation mark, relevant register and current status may also be checked.
