The most appropriate interpreting format is not determined by audience size alone. The decisive factors are how the exchange unfolds, the languages participants need to speak and hear, whether the programme can accommodate pauses, its duration, the venue and remote participation. A small presentation with an uninterrupted agenda may call for simultaneous interpretation, while a large bilateral meeting centred on dialogue may work consecutively. A fixed threshold of five people, or any other number, is therefore not a professional criterion by itself.
Consecutive interpretation is a natural choice for negotiations, interviews, site visits, training with discussion, appointments with a notary or public authority, and conversations in which the parties take turns. The speaker completes a short unit of meaning and the interpreter then renders it in the other language. This format preserves personal contact and supports follow-up questions, but the pauses must be reflected in the schedule. A quiet meeting may need no specialised equipment, whereas a larger room can require suitable sound reinforcement.
Simultaneous interpretation is better suited to events where the speech and programme need to remain continuous: conferences, congresses, panels, large presentations, live broadcasts and multilingual events. The audience follows its selected language on a separate channel while the speaker continues without pausing after every segment. Whispered interpretation, or chuchotage, is a limited form of simultaneous delivery for a small number of listeners positioned close to the interpreter. Its suitability also depends on acoustics, duration and meeting style rather than on one universal headcount.
The language architecture can matter more than the size of the audience. In a bilateral conversation, one interpreter may work consecutively in both directions. At a multilingual conference, separate simultaneous channels allow each group to listen in its selected language. The speaking and listening languages do not always have to be symmetrical: participants may speak in more languages than those into which interpretation is provided. Each arrangement is planned around available professionals and the event’s actual communication flows.
Duration, intensity and subject matter determine the team and preparation. A short consecutive assignment is often handled by one interpreter, but a long or demanding programme may need another allocation. During extended simultaneous interpretation, professionals normally alternate.
