A supplement to a secondary education diploma is not a general explanatory note but an official school document linked to a specific diploma. ## What does the diploma supplement contain?
The exact content depends on the prescribed form and the year of issue. It commonly includes the diploma series and number, the holder’s name, the school, mode of study, profile or specialisation, subjects, annual and final grades, state matriculation examination results and overall grade. These fields give a university, employer or authority a fuller account of the completed secondary education.
## When are translation and legalisation required?
A translation is most often requested for admission to education, employment, vocational qualification or recognition of education in another country. Whether an apostille, another form of authentication or translation alone is needed depends on the issuing country, the country of use and the rules of the specific recipient. Authentication proves the document’s origin; it does not replace academic recognition.
## When does a Bulgarian diploma supplement need an apostille?
For documents issued by Bulgarian schools, NACID provides administrative service 1642 for Apostille certification of documents from the preschool, school and vocational education system. The Apostille certifies the authenticity of the signature, the capacity of the signatory and, where necessary, the seal on the document. It does not alter grades, the curriculum or the rights conferred by the diploma.
## How is electronic or paper authentication handled?
A secondary education diploma supplement issued after 1 January 2007 and available in the official register is among the documents that NACID can verify administratively through the electronic application route. An original may be required for an older document, a missing register entry or a record that cannot be verified electronically. The preliminary review checks that the diploma and supplement details are legible and consistent.
## How are the diploma and supplement presented as a connected set?
The two documents are compared by holder, school, series and number, issue date and stated education level. A recipient may request the complete set because the diploma confirms the completed level while the supplement shows the programme content and results. Translation volume, authentication count and administrative steps are calculated from the documents actually required rather than from a universal package.
## How is a supplement issued abroad handled?
For a supplement to a foreign diploma intended for use in Bulgaria, the applicable route depends on the country and issuing institution. It may involve an apostille in the country of origin, consular authentication, an exemption under an international treaty or another accepted form. Translation and document authentication are distinct from recognition of secondary education, which has its own competent authority and requirements.
## How are subjects, grades and teaching hours translated?
The translation covers every heading, subject, grade, number of teaching hours, profile, specialisation, qualification, note, signature and seal. The original grading scale and official names are rendered consistently without inventing an equivalent grade or a qualification that is not stated. Names and registration details are cross-checked between the diploma, the supplement and the supplied identity document.
