A higher education diploma records an awarded academic degree, the completed programme and, where applicable, a professional qualification. Its diploma supplement adds courses, grades, credits, workload and the form of study. A university, employer, public authority or professional body may review both documents and can also request a transcript, confirmation letter or programme description for its own procedure.
When a Bulgarian diploma is intended for use abroad, the receiving institution decides whether it needs an apostille, another form of authentication or an appropriate translation only. NACID provides the apostille service for educational and certifying documents issued by Bulgarian higher education institutions and research organisations. The issuer, document type, signatures, registration details and the status of the supplement are checked before submission.
An apostille confirms the authenticity of a signature and the official capacity of the person who signed. It does not recognise the academic degree, convert grades or grant professional rights. The diploma and supplement belong to one academic record, but may have separate numbers, signatures and page structures; each therefore has to meet the formal requirements applicable at the destination.
The route for use abroad depends on international agreements, the Apostille Convention and the recipient’s own rules. A university may require translations of both diploma and supplement, an employer may ask for proof of the degree, and a regulator may apply a separate professional-recognition process. Translation and legalisation are arranged around the real use rather than padded with unnecessary steps.
For a diploma issued by a foreign higher education institution and intended for Bulgaria, authentication of origin, translation and academic recognition are separate stages. The competent recognition body depends on whether the holder is continuing education, applying for employment, entering a regulated profession or completing another administrative procedure. Apostille or legalisation requirements follow the issuing country and the international rules in force.
The translation reproduces the institution’s official name, degree, field of study, professional qualification, courses, credits, grades, dates and registration data. Personal names and identifiers remain consistent across the diploma and supplement. Abbreviations, seals, electronic signatures, verification codes and notes are described from the visible source without inventing information that the original does not contain.
