Bank reference for a foreign recipient
A bank reference certifies particular aspects of the relationship between a bank and its customer, with the financial information varying by request. Its use abroad depends on the purpose, the recipient’s instructions, an accurate translation and the accepted form of authentication.

A bank reference is a statement issued by a bank about its customer. It is not a bank guarantee and does not create a payment obligation towards a beneficiary. Depending on its purpose, it may confirm the banking relationship, balances or account movements, liabilities, account freezes, issued guarantees or another expressly requested fact. It can be used in transactions, tenders, counterparty checks, visa applications and administrative procedures.
The translation preserves the issuing bank, account holder, addressee, reference number and date, currency, reporting period and every financial qualification. Personal names, corporate names, legal form, account identifiers and limitations in the wording remain consistent throughout. Schedules and tables are treated as parts of the same document rather than as unrelated text.
The scope is determined when the customer asks the bank to issue the reference. A recipient may require a named addressee, a recent issue date, a specified currency, the duration of the banking relationship or confirmation of a particular circumstance. Another recipient may accept an electronic document or direct confirmation by the bank. These requirements should be known before translation because a translator cannot add a fact omitted by the issuer.
An apostille or consular legalisation is not automatic for every bank reference. The document normally originates from a commercial bank, while the Hague Convention concerns foreign public documents. A recipient may accept the original, a qualified electronically signed file or bank confirmation, but may instead request a notarised copy or authentication of a signature. Any subsequent certification then applies to that particular authentication step.
For a reference issued by a Bulgarian bank for use abroad, the country, purpose and recipient’s instructions are considered together. The Bulgarian National Bank is not a universal mandatory stage for all bank references. A foreign reference intended for Bulgaria is assessed by its form, the rules of the issuing country and the requirements of the specific Bulgarian organisation. Apostille, treaty exemption or full legalisation is considered only where it genuinely applies.
For an electronic reference, the original file should be retained with its signature, time stamp, verification code or bank confirmation channel. A printout does not always have the same evidential value. Unnecessary personal data may be limited before the document is supplied for translation only if the recipient does not require the complete record; redaction must not conceal facts that have to appear in the translation.
